LAKE STEVENS, Wash. — In a dramatic season opener for the 2025 women's football campaign, the Lake Stevens Valkyries edged the Skagit Warriors 16-8 in an overtime showdown on Saturday, snapping a seven-year winless streak against Skagit.

Early Lead Sets the Tone

Lake Stevens struck first with 2:35 remaining in the opening quarter, scoring on a short touchdown run and adding two points with a successful kick through the uprights to take an 8-0 lead. At halftime, the Warriors made some adjustments as Alex Moffett Sr discussed in this post-game interview.

Skagit Ties the Game in Regulation

From that point forward, the game turned into a defensive battle. Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm until late in the fourth quarter, when Skagit's KJ Jewell broke through with a 3-yard touchdown run that was set up with a big run from Casey Jensen-Fiksdal. A successful two-point kick tied the game at 8-8, eventually sending the contest into overtime.

Overtime Drama

The Valkyries won the overtime coin toss and capitalized by scoring on their opening possession. Their defense then stood tall, keeping Skagit off the scoreboard to seal the 16-8 victory.

The win marks Lake Stevens’ first triumph over Skagit in more than seven years.

Player Reactions and Next Game

“They came out ready to play and we came out a little flat, but played better toward the end,” said Skagit quarterback Jenni Stahleker. You can see the post-game interview with the QB here.

The Warriors will look to bounce back at home on June 21 when they face Granite Falls at Mount Vernon High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
